Hydrangea macrophylla 'nikko blue' is een middelgrote compacte. dicht vertakte en rijkbloeiende bolhortensia die bloeit van juli tot september met lichtroze tot paarsblauwe bloembollen naargelang de zuurtegraad van de grond. Deze hortensia houdt van ochtendzon en namiddagzon maar kan niet tegen te felle middagzon, dan kan bij zeer hete zomerdagen bladverbranding ontstaan.
