Ligustrum ovalifolium, ook wel grootbladige liguster genoemd is een grote halfwintergroene struik met een dichtopgaande groeivorm. De bladeren zijn langwerpig, ovaal omgekeerd eirond en middengroen tot donkergroen. In juni en juli bloeit deze japanse liguster met witte tot ivoorkleurige geurende bloemen in pluimvorm, daarna in de herfst gevolgd door kleine blauwzwarte besjes waar de vogels op verlekkerd zijn. Ligustrum ovalifolium houdt van een standplaats in volle zon of halfschaduw en is tevreden met iedere niet te natte en dus goeddoorlaatbare grond. De plant is attractief voor bijen en vlinders.
