Ligustrum vulgare "atrovirens" of gewone liguster, is een halfwintergroene middelgrote struik met een compacte, dichtvertakte, symmetrische groei. De bladeren zijn klein, en donkergroen, ze verkleuren bruin in de herfst maar blijven lang hangen. In juni en juli bloeit deze liguster met onopvallende kleine witte tot ivoorkleurige bloempjes in pluimvorm, daarna in de herfst gevolgd door kleine zwarte besjes waar de vogels op verlekkerd zijn. Jaarlijks één tot twee maal snoeien is bij hagen aan te raden. De plant is attractief voor bijen en vlinders.
