Athyrium niponicum "Metallicum", the Japanese rainbow fern, is an elegant deciduous fern with a creeping habit. The metallic leaves are double pinnate, the leaflets are pointed and have a grey-green to reddish purple tint. It prefers a position in the semi-shade or shade and a well-drained, humus-rich, acid to slightly alkaline, normal to moist soil. Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum' is very hardy.
