Taxus baccata wordt in het nederlands venijnboom genoemd wegens zijn giftige delen. Het is een groenblijvende conifeer met glanzende, zachte, groene naalden. Taxus baccata houdt zowel van een standplaats in de volle zon als in de volle schaduw. Hij houdt niet van natte voeten. Deze boom is langlevend, traaggroeiend, verdraagt zeer goed snoei en is zeer geschikt als groenblijvende haag.
