Prunus lusitanica, in het nederlands portugese laurier genoemd is een grote wintergroene sierstruik met een compacte dichtvertakte, opgaande vorm. Hij bloeit in mei en juni met kleine witte, geurende bloempjes in tot 25cm grote trossen en heeft glanzende, ovale, donkergroene bladeren. Hij prefereert een standplaats in de halfschaduw of zon, doet het goed in vrijwel iedere grondsoort, is redelijk winterhard en produceert in de herfst niet eetbare vruchtjes.
