Thuja plicata "Atrovirens" is een compacte variant van de reuzenlevensboom. Het is een mooie, groenblijvende, middelgrote tot grote, traaggroeiende conifeer met een rechte stam en een bossige, kegelvormige habitus. De bladeren zijn schubvormig, glanzend donkergroen aan de bovenzijde en eerder grijsgroen aan de onderkant. Deze reuzenlevensboom houdt van een beschutte standplaats in volle zon en een goed doorlaatbare grond. Hij is goed winterhard, matig tot redelijk droogtetolerant, verdraagt zeewind en luchtvervuiling en is goed ziekteresistent.
